CM’s security breached
Cop Arrested, Omar Says It’s Non-Event
Jammu, June 10: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s security was breached in the border town of RS Pura near here Friday afternoon when a police constable rushed toward him in a menacing manner.
Police constable identified as Sohan Lal (belt number 1970), son of Ghara Ram, resident of Nai Basti, Gulabgarh was deployed on special duty at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu auditorium at R S Pura where the Chief Minister held interaction with the newly elected Sarpanchs and Panchs.
“He broke cordon and ran towards the Chief Minister as he was about to board the state helicopter in R S Pura,” official sources said.
Omar flew in from Srinagar this morning to hold his maiden interaction with newly elected Sarpanchs and Panchs in Jammu region.
Eyewitnesses said that the constable shouted “patriotic” slogans and shouted that he wanted to meet the Chief Minister. “I am a patriot and I want to convey to the Chief Minister something,” they said quoting the constable as saying. He also chanted slogans like “Bharat Mata Ki Jai……”
The CM’s security personnel however prevented him from reaching Omar and he was taken into custody.
“The constable rushed towards Omar but before he could reach him, the CM’s security guards tackled and pinned him down,” maintained sources.
Senior police officials while playing down over the issue said the cop was mentally unstable. Sources, however, questioned, “If the constable was mentally unstable, why was he placed in the security grid of the chief minister who is covered under the maximum Z-plus security cover?”
“The constable has been taken into custody and he was being interrogated,” sources said.
This is the second case of breach of security of the chief minister.
Earlier, last year a constable had thrown a shoe at him during the Independence Day function in Srinagar on August 15. That constable has been dismissed from service.
IT’S A NON-EVENT: OMAR
Meanwhile, commenting on the incident, Omar wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter: “I’m really touched some of you cared enough to ask but seriously I didn’t even notice anything other than the fact that he seemed unbalanced”.
In another tweet, he clarified, “Wow, I can’t believe a non event was made such a big deal of. My security wasn’t breached & I didn’t face any threat from the unarmed chap.”
