Govt trying to implicate Dr Bhat in militancy: Hurriyat (G)
Srinagar, June 18: Hurriyat Conference Kashmir (G) on Saturday alleged that the government was trying to implicate its incarcerated leader Dr Ghulam Muhammad Bhat in militancy related activities.
“We want to clarify that Dr Bhat, who is presently lodged in Tihar Jail, New Delhi, is purely a political leader and is not even remotely associated with militancy,” said the Hurriyat spokesman Ayaz Akbar in a statement today.
He said Bhat was arrested on January 22, 2010, from Bemina while he was purchasing household goods.
“The police beat him severely and smashed his head. As a result, he had to be got admitted in SKIMS, Soura, for treatment. Then he was forcibly shifted from SKIMS, Soura, to New Delhi and lodged in a special cell for interrogation for several days. During this investigation, Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani was also arrested from airport and taken to Lodhi Police Station where he was questioned for several hours.”
The spokesman said despite doing all this,” police could not prove any of the charges leveled against Bhat.”
“He was then shifted to Tihar Jail on judicial remand and is still lodged there. Legally he was supposed to be produced before the court of law but the police referred his case to the National Investigation Agency for investigation. Now the NIA has started to reinvestigate the case. Earlier, the police had arrested Bhat in a fake case and produced a challan against him in Udhampur Court. But the Udhampur Court exonerated him of all the charges and issued orders for his release.”
