‘258 booked under PSA since March 2010’

Srinagar, June 1: Police on Wednesday said that 258 persons were booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) between March 2010 and May 2011.
Reacting to the news report “258 booked under PSA in 3 months” published in Greater Kashmir on Tuesday, a police spokesman said: “As has been informed to the media, in the past as well, that the number of persons arrested from March 2010 till May 2011 is about 5000. All of them except 258 persons who were booked under PSA were detained. Further 83 persons have been released out of these 258. Timber smugglers and drug peddlers have also been detained under PSA.”
The spokesman said that from March 2010 till May 2011, 709 incidents of stone-pelting were reported across the valley. “Nearly 160 incidents of arson and vandalisation of government properties were reported. More than 206 government buildings and 73 vehicles were either gutted or damaged. At least 78 incidents of arson and vandalisation of private properties by violent miscreants were also reported during the period. Moreover, 6 school buildings were either burnt or damaged during the same period, besides number of school buses were damaged by stone pelting and arson. In these violent acts 2,844 policemen and about 2500 CRPF men were injured.”
