Dr Abdullah inaugurates Cochlear Implant workshop
Chib urges surgeons to adopt modern techniques

Srinagar, June 1: Union Minister for New and Renewal Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday inaugurated a two day workshop on Cochlear Implant and Micro-Ear Surgery at Government Medical College Srinagar. The workshop is organized by Department of ENT and Head and Neck Surgery of the GMC.
Dr Abdullah on the occasion said the Union government was keen to provide every possible support to the state government for upgradation of medical infrastructure in the state. He said Cochlear Implant and Micro-Ear Surgery workshop would benefit the ENT surgeons and students immensely.
Dr Abdullah said that he would request the Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad for provision of adequate funds for promotion of Health and Medical sector in the state including the ENT. He said that expansion of the GMC, Srinagar would be made by acquiring adjacent land.
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister for Medical Education and Youth Services and Sports Dr RS Chib said the Cochlear Implant and Micro-Ear Surgery was an innovative method performed in very few centers world over, adding that its commencement in GMC, Srinagar would improve the medical facilities available to the people.
Chib thanked the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Union Ministers, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Dr Farooq Abdullah for their constant support and guidance and taking keen interest to make this prestigious Medical College more vibrant and patient friendly.
Chib expressed his happiness over the initiatives by the department of ENT, Head & Neck for starting the Cochlear Implant Surgery, including the provision for the pre-operative evaluation and post-operative rehabilitation of the patients.
Talking to Greater Kashmir on the sidelines of the event prominent ENT specialist Dr Manzoor Ahmed Latoo said the workshop was of “historic importance”.
“It will open new avenues of treatment in Kashmir,” he said adding the Cochlear Implant was “highly specialized procedure.”
Among others Principal GMC Srinagar, Dr Shahida Mir, Medical Superintendent, SKIMS, Dr. Tabish, Retired Prof. Dr. Mir Mohammad Maqbool, Guest faculty Prof. Mehmood- El- Tarabishi (Egypt) and many delegation from in and outside the State participated the occasion.
