Int'l expert team surveys Kishanganga storage facility

TARIQ RASOOL

Bandipora, June 19: A high-level team of water commissioners, comprising members from the International Court of Arbitration from India and Pakistan, Sunday completed inspection of the 330 MW Kishanganga Hydro Power Project here in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
After inspecting the Dam site in Gurez on Saturday, the delegation arrived here on Sunday morning to inspect the Power House and Head Race Tunnel (Phase 5) in Karlpora Bandipora. They also inspected storage facility, ventilation tunnel and pressure shaft, officials said.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Manzor Ahmed Lone said: “The team visited the power houses and allied technical places of the project. They also inspected Power House in Karlpora.”
The group includes the 10-member Indian team led by Indus Water Commissioner G Ranganathan. His Pakistani counterpart Sheraz Jamil Memon is heading a nine member delegation.
On Saturday, the team had visited the site of the power project in Gurez sector near the Line of Control. A detailed review meeting was held after the inspection of the project site.
Pakistan claims that the project violates Indus Water Treaty between the two countries.
The sources said the visit will conclude on June 20. The hydropower project is being built on Kishanganga River, which flows into Pakistan. The project is likely to be completed in February, 2014.
