Water scarcity hits City areas

SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI

Srinagar, June 22:  With rise in mercury, some City areas have complained of water scarcity for the past few days.

LAL BAZAR, BAGHWANPORA BELT
The residents of Lal Bazar and Baghwanpora said the taps were running almost dry for the past few days.
“The pressure is so low that it takes an hour to fill a bucket,” said Syed Muzaffar Rizvi of Baghwanpora.
A housewife said she couldn’t even wash the utensils. “Last night the pressure reduced so much that I had to give up washing the utensils,” she said. Similar were the complaints of other nearby Mohallas in the west City.

CHANAPORA
Residents of Housing Colony Chanapora in the south City are up in arms against the authorities for what they said failing to ensure water supply to the area for past more than two weeks.
A delegation of residents from the colony told Greater Kashmir that the women folk have to walk miles to fetch water for drinking and cooking from other colonies.
“Sometimes we don’t have water to drink than to talk of it for washing and other purposes,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, a local.
His neighbour, Abdul Gani, said though the colony gets water supply for a maximum of an hour or so during the day, that too remains unscheduled.
The delegation said the situation has become extremely difficult given the hot weather condition these days.

RAWATHPORA
The residents of Hilal Colony Baghat Rawatpora have complained that they are facing acute shortage of potable water supply for the past around a week.
The Mohalla President Abdul Hamid said: “Due to the scarcity of water, we are facing hardships in doing our daily activities like cooking, washing and bathing.”
“Despite complaints no steps have been taken to improve the supply,” he added.
The residents of Hilal Colony  said the problem was there only for the people living on the bund side while others get adequate supply.
They said a separate supply line measuring around hundred meters would solve the problem. The appealed the Executive Engineer PHE to look into the matter.

OFFICIALS SPEAK
The Executive Engineer Public Health Engineering department Rafi Ahmed Malik said the matter had come to his notice.
About Chanapora, he said, the supply network has been affected by construction works.
“Some houses have come up on the pipeline itself thereby affecting the supplies,” the Xen told Greater Kashmir.
He said the department was coming up with a plan to revamp the supply network so that the problem is solved. About Rawathpora, he admitted that the houses towards the Bund were facing water shortage.
“The supply to the houses at high elevation gets affected due to rampant use of boosters in the area… We will soon launch a drive in the area and sieze all illegally used boosters and pump sets,” he said.
Meanwhile the PHE Xen said residents of any areas facing water scarcity should contact the PHE Control Room at Exchange Road or call the helpline numbers for respite.

OLD GAGRIBAL HAILS PHE ENDEAVOUR
The residents of Old Gagribal have hailed the PHE Srinagar Xen for “timely restoration” of water supply to the area.
They said by the time the supply was restored, water tankers provide respite.
