Measures afoot to check timber smuggling: Altaf
Srinagar: Minister for Forests and Environment, Mian Altaf today said several innovative steps had been taken for countering timber smuggling, redemption of forest land, fencing of forest areas and raising of plantation on vacant forest land.
He said for the purpose, crores of rupees under State and Centre programmes were being expended.
Altaf said, with a view to reduce dependence on firewood, the Government has decided to provide free of cost LPG cylinders and solar lights to the people living in and around forest areas. Altaf kick started the scheme today from forest village Donadoo Kellar in Shopian by distributing free of cost solar lights to 83 families.
Addressing public, Altaf said the conservation of State’s rich treasure of green gold was prime duty of the Government.
Altaf called upon the people especially forest dwellers to play their role in the protection of rare property from misuse, adding that proper use of forest wealth was most beneficial to boost economy. “Let us all pledge to protect and safeguard this rare wealth bestowed by God to our State” he said, adding conservation of green gold was vital for survival.
