Mirwaiz under house arrest
Srinagar, June 3: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest Friday. This was second consecutive Friday when the separatist leader, who delivers Friday sermon at historic Jamia Masjid here, was detained in his house.
Castigating State Government for imposing curbs on him, Mirwaiz said that after ‘usurping political and civil rights they are now trampling the religious rights of Kashmiris.’
“These acts of interference are hurting the sentiments of Kashmiri Muslims. We wouldn’t tolerate this highhandedness,” he said.
Spokesman of Hurriyat (G) Ayaz Akbar told Greater Kashmir that a large contingent of policemen was deployed around the residence of Syed Ali Geelani this morning when the latter was addressing a news conference.
“The police first informed him that he cannot go out as he is under house detention and later, after half an hour, released him,” Akbar said, adding that Geelani Sahib offered Friday prayers at Iqra Masjid, Saraibala.
Democratic Freedom Party Chairman Shabir Ahmed Shah was also put under house arrest today.
