Sheep, goat rearing profitable ventures: Ruhullah

Budgam, June 7: Minister for Sheep and Animal Husbandry Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has said that Cattle & Sheep rearing have ample potential to boost the economy of the State and generate employment opportunities.
He said District Budgam has vast postures and grass fields which can facilitate such ventures. The Minister was addressing a review meeting of Sheep and Animal Husbandry departments.
Commissioner/ Secretary Sheep and Animal Husbandry, B D Sharma, Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Muhammad Rafi, Director Animal Husbandry, G R Mir, Director Sheep Husbandry, B.R. Kotwal, CEO, animal Husbandry, Dr. F.A. Kaloo, Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Budgam Dr. Andrabi and other senior officers of the concerned departments were present on the occasion.
The meeting was informed that district Budgam has the total live stock population of 3.97 lakhs besides 2.62 poultry population. Out of 3.97 lakhs 1.94 lakh are cattle population and 1.63 lakh are cross breed. The meeting was told that during 2010-11 the milk production in the district Budgam has reached upto 109.74 mts simultaneously the egg production was recorded at 14.67 million. While giving details about the meat production from poultry (broilers) it was informed that during 2010-11 it has reached up to 49.37 kgs.
The meeting was also informed that there are 123 Veterinary institutions in the district out of which 95 centers have artificial insemination facilities. Where from 48966 artificial inseminations were carried out, recording 20216 cross breed births. To boost poultry production 485 private poultry forms have been established across the district, besides 50 diary cooperative societies under IDDP were made functional.
Referring to the Sheep Sector it was given out that sheep population in the district has reached to 1.78 lakh out of which 1.34 lakh are cross breed of marino. The goad population in the district has risen to 0.56 lakh a marginal increase compare to last year.
