…And The Bund became a road
BEFORE taking any development work in hand our planners and engineers need to understand difference in growth and development and use of different construction materials as per need, utility, environment, architecture and health hazards.
Much is said and even written about heritage of Kashmir, its preservation and conservation but without understanding it. The same is evident by a developmental work taken in hand without apparent application of mind. Well I mean macadamization of the famed walkway, The Bund, which has attracted one and all for decades.
The Bund is not any road where vehicular traffic will have to ply. It’s a walkway. Why macadamization of this road.
Tar macadam is required on the surface of a road where mechanical force (rolling force is applied) that is the force created by a moving vehicle and to overcome the frictional force between rubber tyre and that of surface of road. There is no such need for the Bund.
Interlock tiles or cement tiles could have been used for optimum utility on the walkway without disturbing its beauty and essence.
But may be it was the novelty of the planners in the government who wanted to overcome traffic jams on Residency Road during peak hours by utilizing the Bund for the traffic.
The macadamization is entirely killing for the Bund. Hope the concerned will wake up and take appropriate action to minimize putting black prints. By this we may save the glory of the Bund. Or else our future generation will curse us.
