Wullar initiatives

This refers to the news 'Major initiative to restore Wullar' (GK June 3). It is obvious a fact that in the name of restoration of lakes and other water bodies of the valley, we have been marring their essence. Dying Dal and Anchar lakes are examples. Government has left no stone unturned to restore these water bodies but the results speak much more than the initiatives. Wullar Lake is the Asia's largest lake which needs a lot of expertise to handle. It is surrounded by lakhs of willow trees, at least 20 lakh. Their removal will surely mar the biodiversity of the lake. Also it may be bidding Good-Bye to the visiting water birds and other species. Keeping in view the environmental factors it does not seem sound enough to treat the lake in such a way. However, the illegal encroachments must be checked and the lake must be set free.
