Sugar scam whistleblower ‘threatened’

UMER MAQBOOL DAR

Srinagar, Feb 28: In a fresh twist to the multi-crore sugar scam allegedly involving top officials of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department and Food Corporation of India, the whistleblower and a main witness of the case was allegedly threatened by unidentified gunmen outside his house at Shah Anwar Colony Hyderpora here last night.
The Special Investigation Team of police probing the case is leaving for Jammu to nab the two main accused involved in the scam.
The main witness Haseeb Trumboo who provided lead to the police in case told Greater Kashmir that “two motorcycle borne youth stopped outside his residence when he was returning home.” “They pointed pistol towards me and threatened me of dire consequences for exposing the scam.
The duo fled away from the spot after seeing a car approaching towards the spot,” he said.
Sources told Greater Kashmir, that police was leaving for Jammu to nab the two main accused, whose names have cropped up during investigation and to further probe the role of FCI officials.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, Superintendent of Police, South City, Sujeet Kumar said, “SIT is leaving for Jammu within 2-3 days to nab the accused.” He said six persons had recorded statements under section 164-A Crpc before court.
“We have arrested five persons so far in this case and two of them were bailed, while three are in our custody,” he said.
Pertinently, police busted a scam, in which sugar meant for consumers was being sold in open market by private dealers in league with CAPD and FCI officials.
