‘1,000 killed in Libya, 1,00,000 in Kashmir’
No comparison between the two: Geelani
GK NEWS NETWORK
Srinagar, Mar 10: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Thursday maintained that there was no comparison between the unrest in Libya and Kashmir as the killings of civilians in Kashmir were much higher.
In a statement, Geelani accused the New Delhi of leaving no stone unturned to hide the ground realities in the Valley. “The developments in Libya are being projected worldwide by the media and importantly serious note is taken on it. However, New Delhi used every tactic to suppress the news about the unrests in past three years. And whatever news reached the international community, it was not taken seriously as Kashmir does not have oil wells,” Geelani said.
Reacting to the statement of India’s Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, Geelani said, “While one ruler in Libya is inflicting atrocities against his people to save his chair, one of the biggest democracies of South Asia, India, has waged war against Kashmiris to suppress their aspirations.”
Elaborating, Geelani said while the unrest in Libya is few weeks old, the ongoing movement in Kashmir is going on since 1947. “According to media reports nearly thousand people have been killed in Libya while over one lakh people in Kashmir have been martyred by Indian soldiers. The problem in Libya is purely its internal affair. However, India is holding Kashmir due to its military might. It is ironical that India has been claiming that situation is normal. I want to ask what happened to over 10,000 Kashmiris who have been subjected to enforced disappearance by various security agencies?” he said.
Geelani said thousands of Kashmiris are still languishing in jails and arrest spree is on. “I appeal the international human rights organizations including the Amnesty International to depute a fact finding group to have first hand account of the ground realities in Kashmir,” he said.
