Government refers GMC vacant posts to PSC

Jammu, Mar 10: The Government on Thursday referred the available posts of lecturers in Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar to Public Service Commission (PSC) for direct recruitment.
 Replying to a calling attention notice of M Y Tarigami, the Minister for Medical Education R S Chib in the Legislative Assembly today said as many as 37 lecturers have been appointed during the current fiscal in the GMC Srinagar through PSC adding that higher positions of Assistant professors and above are filled up as soon as eligible Lecturers/ Assistant professors and associate professors become available.
 As a short term measure, the Minister said 20 faculty members (one professor and 19 lecturers) have also been engaged on contract basis in the college.
 Additionally, he said Government has also issued SRO 384 in December 2009 for engaging faculty members under academic arrangement under which retired faculty members can also be engaged upto the age of 65 years.
 Chib said the process for engaging faculty members under academic arrangement is already on adding that 165 applications have been received by the Principal, Government Medical College Srinagar in this behalf.
 Earlier, Tarigami raising the issue pointed out that it was mandatory to have one Professor in each specialty as per MCI norms. He said presently  there are only 10 regular professors against 23 specialists in the premier medical college. Out of 504 available posts of consultants only 179 are filled up, he added.
 He called for adopting MCI norms under which a faculty member is eligible to become a professor after 7 years as against 13 years in vogue in the State presently.
