Snow clearance operation begins on Sgr-Leh highway

Drass, Mar 13: Snow clearance operation on the mountainous Srinagar-Leh Highway, the only road linking the Ladakh with rest of Jammu and Kashmir, was kick-started on Sunday.
The highway was closed on November 30 last year following heavy snowfall. The GREF, a wing the Border Roads Organization today started the snow clearance operation from Batra Camp Drass to treacherous Zojilla Pass. Officials said the operation will culminate at Sonamarg next month.
On the occasion, special prayers were held for safe and successful completion of the arduous task. Zojilla Pass on the highway which experiences heavy snowfall and remain shut for nearly six months is considered to be the most difficult and avalanche prone terrain.
Though 5-7 feet of snow has accumulated along the highway, however the officials fear that snow avalanches might affect the operation. Braving the bone-chilling cold, the laborers of 55 RCC (GREF) pressed the dozers and snow-cutters into service to clear the highway Zojilla pass and Gamri.
“The highway will be cleared upto zero point in 40 to 45 days for traffic subject to weather,” Col. Harish Kukar of BRO who leads the snow clearance operation told reporters at Drass. He was flanked by the Project’s Area Commander, Vijayyak, Chief Engineer Anil Kumar and 762 Border Roads Task Force Commander Col Harish Kumar
