Sugar scam: Main accused in police remand

UMER MAQBOOL

Srinagar, Mar 14: The main accused in the multi-crore sugar scam, Paramjeet Singh, was sent to 10-day police remand by a court on Monday.
Police sources disclosed Paramjeet's, owner of Vikas Trading Company, questioning continued for third day after he was arrested from Qazigund by Special Investigation Team on Saturday.
“He is not cooperating with investigation,” sources said, adding that raids continued across the state to nab his manager Ravi Sharma who is absconding.
“More arrests would take place within the next few days as those arrested have revealed the names of many officials who used to receive kickbacks for selling sugar, meant for public distribution, in open market,” they said.
Meanwhile, SIT has approached Deputy Commissioner Srinagar and Director Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution department to release the eight truckloads of sugar seized by it.
“We have shot letters to both of them to approach court for releasing the sugar which is in our custody,” they further said.
The Food Corporation of India is yet to initiate action against the transporters involved in the scam.
“The transporters against whom police has recommended action are still ferrying ration and sugar to other districts from FCI Jammu godown,” said an official wishing anonymity.
When contacted, General Manager FCI (J&K), RC Meena, said that he is waiting for the report. “Once I get report of departmental inquiry, then action will be initiated against the indicted persons,” he said.
Police have arrested more than 10 persons including six officials allegedly involved in the scam.
