Anti-tobacco rally in Srinagar

Srinagar, Mar 16: In connection with Anti Tobacco drive, a two days capacity building workshop on Tobacco Control for Srinagar and Budgam was organised by JK Voluntary Health & Development Association here today.
The workshop was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo, SSP Srinagar, while Ashiq Hussain Bukhari was the guest of honour on this occasion. The two days workshop of various NGOs of Srinagar and Budgam Districts will jointly work for anti tobacco campaign.
It was informed that 8000 public places in District Srinagar and 3000 public places in District Budgam including a few shopping malls have been identified to be made smoke-free within a period of 18 months.
The workshop was attended by representatives of various civil society and NGO groups, Health Department, Drug and Food Control Department and Education Department, Various Speakers who spoke on the occasion include Mr. Ashish Panday representative of VHAL, Dr. Arshad Hussain and Dr Javaid Malik and A.R. Hanjura.
Earlier welcoming the government and non-government agencies, A.M. Mir, Executive Director informed that during last 20 years the smoking and tobacco products have become an epidemic in urban and rural areas which is a menace in Kashmir Valley. He said that global adult survey has shown that there are 67 percent passive smokers in J&K which is the highest percentage in the whole country. JK Voluntary Health and Development Association has taken a lead role in prohibiting smoking in J&K state.
