End arrest spree: Geelani to Govt

‘Politics being played on detainees’

Srinagar, Mar 16: The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Wednesday demanded an immediate end to the arrest spree in the Valley and unconditional and honourable release of political prisoners.
The veteran leader alleged that politics was being played from New Delhi to Srinagar on the issue of political prisoners. “As far as release of political leaders is concerned, all the people are playing politics from New Delhi to Srinagar on the issue. P Chidambaram (Union Home Minister) had promised release of prisoners through his eight-point formula in the aftermath of last year’s agitation and likewise the Centre’s interlocutors are harping on the issue whenever they visit the Valley,” Geelani said in a statement.
“Several people also raised their voice on the issue in the state Assembly for petty politics but despite all this not a single person was released. In fact, the mass arrests continue. There must be an immediate end to the cycle of arrests and there should be unconditional and honourable release of political prisoners,” he said.
Demanding revocation of PSA, Geelani said the individual freedom of citizens is a far cry in the state and claimed that people are being jailed under such laws which are totally against the human rights.
He castigated the Government for arresting Islamic Students League leader Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi under PSA and claimed that many of the political leaders are ailing in jails.
