Why politicians?

My morning in US starts with online edition of Greater Kashmir. In 16th March 2011 GK edition, the picture about Onco-hematology Confernce hit me. I fail to understand what politicians are doing in a Science Conference. Always whenever we have any scientific conference in Kashmir,  why we need politicians to preside them. Why politicize Science. Please spare the Science dear politicians. What is in the minds of organizing members of such conferences. Why not invite any good scientists, doctors, philosophers, writers, thinkers to preside such function.
