‘CPRF, policemen being trained to handle protests’
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Srinagar, Mar 1: The Special Director General of CRPF (J&K zone), Anirudh Uppal on Tuesday
said that paramilitary CRPF along with policemen were undergoing training to control protests and mob violence that claimed over 100 lives in the Valley last summer.
"We are doing training with state police in handling crowds. And how to deal with mobs," Uppal told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.
He hoped that there would not be a "repeat of situation which we faced last year".
Asked if some of the killings could have been avoided, he said these were all "academic questions". "These are all academic questions which I cannot answer because these sort of unfortunate incidents when they take place then each incident is different," the Special DG said.
CRPF and Police have been accused of using disproportionate amount of force in response to stone pelting. "We had these non-lethal weapons last year and we are bringing more of them this year, so that collateral damage is limited and as less as possible," Uppal said.
"What some individuals do may be misguided, or in the heat of the moment they do. I suppose the adults are responsible for their actions. One attempt now is that let boys and girls of the state know that they have lots of choices that they can make," he said.
