Srinagar, Mar 23: Police Wednesday claimed to have arrested three youth who tried to abduct a teenage girl in “full public gaze” last evening in Shah-e-Khaas when she was leaving coaching centre for her home.
Addressing a news conference, Superintendent of Police north City Shokat Hussain said at around 7:00 PM last evening three youth identified as Zahoor Ahmed, Hilal Matta and Faisal Fayaz tried to abduct the eight standard student in Babademb area.
“The trio were waiting for her outside coaching centre in a Maruti swift JK01M 5797. The moment she came out, they bundle her inside the car, but she managed to escape from their clutches and raised a hue and cry,” the SP said adding that some locals had tried to chase the car but it managed to flee.
The locals and the victim, as per the police, rushed to nearby Police Post Bana Mohalla and filed a complaint.
“The girl said she could identify one of the abductors. In no time we traced him and he revealed the identity of the other two who were also immediately caught,” the SP said.
The SP added the trio have been booked under cases of attempt to rape, eve teasing and abduction vide FIR NO 21 of 2011.
About the trio, Shah said they belong to well off families.
“Zahoor is contractor, Hilal deals with wood business, while Faisal (whose identity she gave to police) is a class 12th student,” the senior cop said.
The SP said the main cause of such incidents was that people were “fast losing our cultural, religious and ethical values.”
“Cultural, ethical and religious values used to be the essence of our society but due to cultural imperialism we are losing those values,” he said.
“We always get lured towards the negatives of the developments of the so called modernization,” he added.
The SP while bringing the accused before the media persons said: “Police action of getting them trapped instantly should serve as an eye-opener for all miscreants that we are fully active and won’t tolerate any such acts.”
The old City police chief cautioned the coaching centres to maintain discipline.
“It’s the responsibility of the coaching centres to ensure that the students disperse immediately after the classes. Besides, it’s better that someone from the family escorts a girl to coaching centres during odd hours,” he opined.
Pertinently, sometime back the Deputy Inspector General of Police north Kashmir Muneer Ahmed Khan took measures to curb eve-teasing outside coaching centres there while the public circles had widely hailed the police endeavour.
But even though complaints of eve-teasing pour in from various Srinagar areas particularly fashionable Airport Road, the City police seems to have failed to take any such steps.
Ironically this is despite the fact that some days back during a Police –Public meet at MR Gunj Police Station, the locals had complained before SSP City Syed Ashiq Hussain Bukhari that eve-teasing was going rampant outside coaching centres and asked him to take action.
But police woke up only after the teenage girl aborted her abduction bid and walked to police station to raise the alarm.
