Waste dumped in Kupwara’s Lal Khul canal
AUTHORITIES IN SLUMBER

Kupwara, Mar 26: The people residing near Lal Khul canal are polluting its water here by dumping waste and sewage into it.
“The canal has become dumping ground for household waste,” some of the concerned residents said.
They said the canal water, which was earlier used by people for cooking and other purposes has been contaminated. “The water is not fit for drinking now,” the residents said.
The inhabitants said the sewage of many houses was also getting spilled into the canal. “The sewerage pipes of many houses open on the canal banks,” they said, adding that walking near such places had become a difficult exercise.
The residents also alleged that the washermen have set up laundries on the canal banks. “They use detergents which further contaminate the water,” the residents said.
They alleged that the district administration was a mute spectator towards the increasing pollution of the canal. “Despite repeated pleas, the officials failed to take any substantial action against the culprits,” they said.
The residents urged the concerned District Development Commissioner, to take immediate action in this regard.
