Guv for achieving self-sufficiency in agri, allied sectors

Jammu, Mar 4: Governor N N Vohra today emphasized the need for modernizing farm practices and achieving self-sufficiency in agriculture and allied sectors in J&K.
Speaking at the 3rd convocation of the SK University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu, today where the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, was the Chief Guest, the governor emphasized the need for large scale seed replacement, introduction of high yielding varieties, ensuring adequate irrigation facilities, adoption of multi-cropping pattern and other interventions for increasing agri-productivity.
The Governor presided over the Convocation while the Chief Minister,   Omar Abdullah, was the Guest of Honour on the occasion.
The Governor observed that over 72 per cent of the State’s population and nearly its work force is dependent on agriculture and allied sectors, adding that by taking the required measures the State will not only meet its own requirements but also generate surpluses which would contribute to the socio-economic development of the people and generate employment opportunities at their doorsteps.
The governor said J&K has very high potential for growth in agriculture, animal and sheep husbandry, poultry farming, mushroom cultivation etc. which can push the growth rate in the agri-sector up to over 3 percent per annum.
