FILE REPORT IN QAYOOM CASE: COURT TO GOVT

Lawyers boycott courts

Srinagar, Mar 7: A local court in Jammu Monday directed the government to file status report in response to an application seeking custody change of incarcerated Kashmir High Court Bar Association (KHCBA) president Mian Qayoom to Kashmir.
“In response to the KHCBA’s application, the Additional Sessions Judge GK Pandita asked the public prosecutor to submit the status report and file objections, if any, regarding the second FIR filed against Qayoom, by 15th March,” Vice President of the lawyers’ body, Advocate Ajaz Bedar said.
Pertinently, last Tuesday, the Additional Sessions Judge had granted bail to Qayoom in a case registered by Gharota Police Station under relevant sections of the Ranbir Penal Code and Unlawful Activities Act, on furnishing of bail and surety bond to the tune of Rs 20,000.
“We have also collected fresh grounds of detention regarding Mian Qayoom by District Magistrate Jammu and it is strange that he (Qayoom) has been booked on the same charges as cited in two previous detentions already quashed by the honorable High Court,” he added.
Meanwhile, work remained suspended in courts across the Valley on the second day today as the KHCBA boycotted work against Qayoom's continued detention.
The lawyers’ body also staged a protest demonstration in the High Court complex here.
