‘Illegal stone crushers’ dot B'pora streams; authorities clueless
TARIQ RASOOL
Bandipora, May 12: Many stone crushers have come up along various streams and forest zones here allegedly in violation of anti-pollution laws.
As many as 12 crushers have been ‘illegally’ set up on the streams wherein Trout are found in abundance. “There has been mushroom growth of crushers on streams and forest zones at Sonarwani, Watrina, Argama and Tragabal in Arin and Madhumati areas,” the local told Greater Kashmir adding that under the nose of Mining and Forest Department, these crushers were wreaking havoc to the ecology and biodiversity at these places.
According to the locals, the pollution emanating from these crushers had severely affected the health of inhabitants. “Many persons have developed respiratory disorders due to inhalation of dust particles and the condition of patients suffering from asthma has deteriorated further,” they said.
Sources said the crusher owners had “unlawfully” obtained necessary permission and No Objection Certificate from the Pollution Control Board. “These crushers have been established in gross violation of the PCB norms,” they said.
Locals allege that these crusher owners had patronage of influential politicians. “The authorities have failed to take any substantial action against the owners as some politicians are backing them,” the locals said.
They said the stone crushers owned by Beacon had adversely affected the trout production in Madhumati stream. “The crushers have come up on steams where the mechanical work is prohibited in view of the Trout fish habitat,” the locals alleged.
When contacted, District Fisheries Officer, Muhammad Sadiq said “Few crushers on Madhumati stream are 50-year-old and department has shot letters to Beacon seeking their immediate closure.”
“The illegal crushers established along the streams will be closed down soon,” he added.
