ENT deptt to start cochlear implant surgery

Srinagar, May 14: The Department of ENT Government Medical College Srinagar will soon introduce cochlear implant surgery in Kashmir for deaf and dumb patients.  The Head department of ENT, Dr Rafeeq Ahmad Pampori said that this kind of implant was not performed in the State. “There was a lacuna of cochlear implant here. People used to perform this procedure outside the state. Now the procedure will be conducted in the department,” he said.  He said the procedure can be performed with successful results on a child of 2-3 years old. “If this is done at right age the patient will be normal. However, the implant is costly and ranges from Rs 5 to 10 lakhs,” Dr Pampori said.    “After the surgery, a patient needs auditory and speech rehabilitation for 1-2 years. Our department is also equipped to do this post-operative procedure for which the patients needed to move to other states,” he added.
