High Court pulls up admin over Lal Chowk traffic mess
Directs for shifting Jammu bound vehicles from Lal Chowk to TRC by May 19
GK COURT CORRESPONDENT
Srinagar, May 16: Taking serious note of non-implementation of Court orders for shifting of Jammu bound vehicles from the City centre of Lal Chowk to Tourist Reception Centre (TRC), the High Court Monday directed the state government to implement the order by May 19.
Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice, FM Ibrahim Kalifulla and Justice Muhammad Yaqoob Mir while hearing the petition seeking an end to traffic mess created by Jammu bound vehicles at Ghantaghar, said: “State Government shall implement the Court order regarding shifting of Jammu bound passenger services to TRC by May 19.”
Besides, the Court asked the state government to file compliance report by May 19 regarding the implementation of the order.
Earlier, on May 9, the same Division Bench directed the state Government to implement the Court order issued in March regarding shifting of Jammu bound passenger services to TRC by May 12. However, state government did not comply with it while the Jammu bound passengers continued to add to traffic congestion in the City centre.
On March 17, the Court had directed the state to carry out certain developmental works to make the already identified Mirakshah Bus Stand operational for Jammu bound Light Motor Vehicles and commuters. While as state government had stated that TRC did not require any developmental work and was ready for operations.
In March the state government constituted a High Level Committee of officers for identifying places to lower down the traffic rush in Lal Chowk.
The Committee in its report submitted before the Court said it had identified TRC and Mirakshah Bus Stand to be used for Jammu bound vehicles to decongest the traffic at Lal Chowk.
The PIL has been filed separately by advocate S Manzoor, advocate G N Wani, advocate Z A Qureshi, advocate J H Reshi and advocate A R Bhat.
Pertinently, the traffic regulating authorities particularly the RTO have failed to allot stands to the passenger cabs like Tata Sumos.
As about the Lal Chowk mess, even as it’s not a designate bus stand, the authorities, including police have been allowing the Jammu bound vehicles to ply from the commercial hub.
