Ganderbal victory

This refers to the news “Soz pats Congress for Ganderbal victory.” On the one hand the so-called Panchayat elections have been held on non-party basis but on the other, politicians like Prof Soz openly congratulate their candidates. This has made a mockery of the entire exercise. It is a fact now that it is the parties in the state which field the candidates in the elections even if they are held on non-party basis. Given the party figures, I think the National Conference is losing ground beneath its feet and it is the other parties which are emerging as winners. Whatever the case be, people at the grassroots level don’t have any expectations from the Panches and Sarpanches who are ultimately affiliated with political parties. Because when the political parties are not able to do anything, what will the Panches and Sarpaches. All this is a futile exercise in which Kashmiris have unnecessarily participated.
