Slathia inaugurates `10 cr handloom project

Srinagar, May 19: Minister for Industries and Commerce S S Slathia today inaugurated an integrated project for development of wool and woollen design here.
The Rs 10 crore project has been sanctioned under Prime Minister’s Economic Package.
The project comprises phase I and II. First phase envisages yarn preparation, design development, training, testing and setting up a centre for wool development in the state.
The second phase envisages wool grading, raw wool processing, spinning and fabric processing to upgrade this sector for overall development of woollen textile in the state.
Slathia said the main aim of the project was to revive and upgrade woollen industry in the state to exploit the “tremendous potential of indigenous wool and woollen products of J&K.”
He said with the establishment of the project, the State’s economy will receive much needed fillip and added that handloom sector has vast employment scope.
The minister went round different units. He was informed that necessary training has been imparted to the workers to produce quality handloom and woollen fabrics.
Managing Director J&K Handloom, Showkat Ahmad informed the minister about the “major achievements” of the corporation and assured that quality woollen products will be produced and put on sale at its different showrooms.
He said under the project different laboratories have been set up for quality control, which will help produce the best quality woollen products.
Later, the minister addressed the workers and assured them that their genuine demands would be considered.
Managing Directors, JKI, JK Cements, Handicrafts and other senior officers were present on the occasion.
