Lopsided comments

This refers to the article "Merit must matter" by Muhammad Kamran (GK May 19). It goes without saying that meritocracy is the order of the day in exams, admissions to the professional courses or jobs. The author makes lopsided comments as far as the urban and rural issues are concerned. Candidates from rural areas should get reservation under ST, SC OBC. By doing so the state government is simply ensuring equality in educational opportunities. Moreover, education at doorsteps is mostly for the elite class and not for rural candidates who have to walk miles together to attend their schools. There is hardly any tuition facility available. Rural areas are not stuffed with elite schools yet candidates like Dr Shah Faesal emerge from there. Lack of basic amenities and infrastructure are common in educational institutions in rural areas. On the other hand students from urban areas get individual attention, regular tuition and the student teacher ratio is also normal. Just because a particular student does not figure in a selection list doesn't make a case for raising questions on the entire selection list. It means the candidate should work a bit harder.
