Soldier scales world’s 8th highest peak

Srinagar, May 20: Rafiq Ahmed Malik, a serving soldier in the JAKLI regiment and resident of village Kuchipora, Islamabad (Anantnag) has done the nation and the Indian Army proud by scaling the world’s eight highest peak Mount Manaslu, 8163 meters in Nepal.
Rafiq was part of the Indian Army expedition that successfully summited the peak Mount Manaslu. The peak is a challenge due to its razor sharp ridges and glaciated terrain. The expedition established four camps enroute to the peak, where the climbers have to negotiate steep stretches and crevasses, besides the threat of avalanches, a defence handout said.
Rafiq Ahmed a seasoned climber joined the Army in Dec 1995 and was graded the best student at NMI, where he learnt mountaineering skills. He has been commended three times for his outstanding achievement in adventure sports.
His achievements are laudable and praise worthy indeed, said a Srinagar based spokesman.
