Srinagar, May 23: Something that will become a tourist attraction in Srinagar, the Department of Posts Srinagar will shortly be launching a ‘Floating Post Office’ in Dal Lake, here. The post office, which is first of its kind in Srinagar, shall function from 10 AM to 6 PM on all days including Sundays during the tourist season.
Besides special envelopes, the post office shall sell covers adorned by pictures of tourist destinations, said Chief Post Master General, J&K Circle, Srinagar, John Samuel at a press meet here today. “This new feature is being introduced in Srinagar for the benefit of the tourists,” he said.
Apart from a 'floating' post office on the Dal Lake, a 'tourist post office' will come up in the famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir. The Department is also working on the 'next day mail' delivery system between the twin capital cities of Srinagar and Jammu,
Samuel said "The objective is to provide 'special cancellation' to the visiting tourists and to attract tourists through special envelopes containing pictures of Gulmarg and other tourist destinations."
All the district and tehsil headquarters would get the mail the next day for which a new mail line has been introduced from Srinagar to Trehgam via Baramulla and Kupwara covering all the important post offices between the line, the Chief Post Master General said. He said the Department is working on the 'next day mail' delivery system between Srinagar and Jammu also. "In Jammu and Kashmir, except Leh, the mail will be delivered within two days," he said.
Samuel said the Department of Posts is also going to inaugurate a post office at Kargil in the frontier region of Ladakh shortly. Work on the infrastructure for the post office is almost 80 per cent complete, he said, adding that projects for post offices at the famous hill stations of Sonamarg and Pahalgam are also in the pipeline and they would be set up in the near future.
