Gulmarg bags best skiing destination award

Srinagar, May 26: Gulmarg, the world famous tourist resort in the Kashmir Valley, has been adjudged as the ‘best skiing destination of 2010’ in an online survey conducted by India Today.
The India Today Group in this behalf presented a commendable certificate to the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Nawang Rigzin Jora here today.
Expressing delight, the Minister said the famous tourist destination has won the award for its enchanting snow-capped slopes and the highest Gondola service.
He said the distinction being achieved by it would further popularize Gulmarg for international and national level skiing events.
The Minister said the government is endeavoring to explore fully adventure tourism potential at Gulmarg and other potential spots of the state.
He said installation of parallel chair lift of Rs 18 crore apace from Kongdori to Marri Shoulder would not only provide added attractions to the tourists but also help in organizing world class skiing events and other winter games at Gulmarg.
The Minister directed the Managing Director, Cable Car Corporation to ensure timely completion for Kongodori Chair Lift facilitating to hold international winter games at Gulmarg.
Jora lauded the sincere efforts of the functionaries of Tourism and its allied departments for making tourism activities a success in the State. He directed them to explore more adventure activities like grass skiing, snow tubing, river rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, car and motor cycle rallies at potential spots for creating more attractions for adventure lovers visiting to the State.
