14 persons drowned in Shopian streams since 1996: Police

Srinagar, May 28: Police on Saturday claimed that 14 persons, including Aasiya and Neelofar, drowned in different streams of Shopian in south Kashmir since 1996.

  In a statement, a police spokesman quoting statistics said that 11 persons have alone drowned in Nallah Rambi Ara in Shopian. “This is the same Nallah in which two local ladies (Aasiya and Neelofar) had drowned in 2009, as was proved by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),” the statement said.  

  The spokesman said that Kounser Jan daughter of Abdul Ahad and Afrooza Akhter daughter of Ali Muhammad, both residents of village Naidgond-Shopian were drowned in Rambi Ara on June 8, 1996.

  He said Ghulam Hassan Mir son of Abdul Ahad of Chitergam and Muhammad Saleem Mir son of Ghulam Hassan, both residents of Muloo Chitergam Shopian also drowned in Rambi Ara on June 18, 1996.

  He said in the subsequent years, Muhammad Shafi Bajad son of Baj-din of Yadwan, Rajouri, Tariq Hussian son of Ghulam Hassan of Kandi, Bashir Ahmad Charg son of Abdul Aziz of Bab Mohalla-Shopian, Dilawar Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Rashid of Bongam,Shopian respectively, also drowned in Rambi Ara.

  The spokesman said the latest victim of Rambi Ara was Ghulam Muhammad Najar son of Muhammad Shaban of Arshipora, Shopian, who died while trying to cross it near Arhama, Shopian on April 28, 2011. 

  Giving details about the drowning incidents in others stream of Shopian, the spokesman said Noor Jehan wife of Nazir Pathan and Parveena Akhter daughter of Ismail Khatana, both residents of Devpora drowned in Lar Nallah at Dev Pora, Shopian on April 14, 2000. He claimed that Showket Ahmad Bhat son of Abdul Salam resident of Nazneenpora-Shopian also drowned in a stream of Shopian on June 29, 2005.
