VC for civil society participation to save Dal
World Earth Day celebrations conclude at KU
Srinagar, May 2: Kashmir University, Vice Chancellor, Professor Reyaz Punjabi on Monday said the civil society should voluntarily participate to conserve the famed Dal lake.
The VC who presided over the valedictory function of the Earth Day celebrations at the varsity said it was “high time to sensitize ourselves on challenges to mother Earth.”
Turning nostalgic, he recalled his childhood days saying the Dal lake used to be “abode of crystal clear waters which people even used to drink.”
He, however, lamented the “way we have collectively contributed in polluting this famous lake.” “Everything is happening before our eyes,” he added.
Meanwhile students and faculty members from various departments and colleges participated in a debate on climatic changes while a poster competition was also organized on the theme of deforestation and its impact on the environment.
Scientist and head, Department of Geology and Geophysics, Dr Shakil A Romshoo said that objective of the Earth Day was not only to create awareness, but to “create a consciousness about importance of planet earth.”
