Fake marriage racket busted: Police

Tral (Pulwama) May 6: Police on Thursday said that it busted a gang, involved in fixing of alleged fake marriages, by arresting three persons, including a woman, in this south Kashmir town.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Tahir Saleem told reporters the three accused had fixed a marriage ceremony of a youth from Manchama Tral with a 25-year old girl, 6-months ago. “They (accused) took cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 2-lakhs from the bridegroom’s family. For past
6- months family thought their son is getting married to a 25-year old girl. The marriage ceremony was scheduled to take place on May 5 (Thursday),” the DSP said.
He said the bridegroom accompanied by five persons left for Saidapora on Thursday to solemnize the marriage ceremony. “As soon as Baraatis arrived they came to know that age of the bride was around 45-years. The girl whom the youth was supposed to get married had been changed,” the DSP added.
Later the family of the bridegroom informed the police. Case under FIR No. 44/2011 was registered and three accused were arrested.
He said the trio had arranged a similar fake marriage for May 11 in the same village and had taken Rs 90,000 from the family of another youth.
