Srinagar/Jammu, May 7: In yet another road accident, five persons including four students died and three were injured in a road mishap on the Srinagar-Jammu highway on Saturday when the vehicle they were traveling in skidded off the road and fell into a 600-feet deep gorge at Dhamthal near Chenani.
Sixteen persons were killed in different road accidents in the state on Friday.
Official sources said the deceased students were returning home after appearing in the Elementary Teachers Training exams at Srinagar.
The deceased have been identified as Naresh, Ravinder, Parveen, Sanjeev, hailing from Panipat in Haryana, and driver Abdul Hamid Parray of Dooru area in south Kashmir’s Islamabad (Anantnag) district. The injured shifted to District Hospital Udhampur were identified as Ashok Bali Singh and Parvinder, residents of Panipat.
“When the vehicle (Travera Car JK021P-431) reached near Dhamthal, 25 kilometers from Udhampur town, the driver lost control over it. The vehicle fell into 600-feet deep gorge, killing five on the spot and injuring three others,” eyewitnesses said.
Soon after getting information about the mishap, police personnel rushed to the spot and started evacuation process with the help of locals.
All the passengers were immediately shifted to District Hospital Udhampur where doctors declared five of them brought dead. One critically injured passenger was later shifted to Military Hospital Udhampur. On Friday, 11 persons including a couple were killed and three minors critically injured in a tragic road accident in Mahore tehsil of district Reasi.
Meanwhile, one Abid Ahmad Ganaie son of Abdul Rehman of Devsar Kulgam succumbed to his injured he had suffered in a road mishap at Malpora on May 3. He died at SKIMS Srinagar.
In another mishap, a Tata 407 mini-bus (JK01C-3272) turned turtle near G.B Pant Hospital in Srinagar, resulting in injuries to six passengers traveling in the vehicle. All the injured were hospitalized.
A scooter (JK01M-9937) hit and injured a pedestrian, Ghulam Nabi Bhat son of Muhammad Abdullah of Khanqahi Moula at Bohri Kadal in old Srinagar. The injured was hospitalized.
