Srinagar, Nov 13: Police on Sunday arrested a Congress activist in connection with duping of Hajj aspirants by a private tour operator here.
Highly placed sources told Greater Kashmir a high profile Congress activist hailing from Kreeri area of north Kashmir was arrested this morning.
“He (accused) had reached an agreement with the private tour operator to arrange visas in lieu of Rs 10 lakh. He had taken nearly Rs 6 lakhs but had done nothing,” sources added.
Congress leadership denied that arrested man had any affiliation with the party. However, sources said that he (accused) was provided security cover and had strong connections with senior Congress leaders.
“He is number one cheater and has been duping people on various pretexts. He is nowhere connected with the party,” senior Congress leader Muhammad Muzaffar Parray told Greater Kashmir.
Meanwhile, police have launched a manhunt to nab another accused who is believed to be a journalist.
“The accused scribe was running the affairs of company in Delhi. We have raided many places to nab him, but he is absconding,” said a top police official.
Following the duping of Hajj aspirants police had constituted a team headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Khanyar Tahir Saleem Khan. The police had raided more than 100 places in Srinagar and other parts of north India over past two weeks to nab the culprits.
When contacted, Senior Superintendent of Police Syed Ashiq Bukhari confirmed arrest of a political worker. “We are looking for other suspects and have constituted a team for it,” he said.
