This refers to Wullar Lake restoration. It is encouraging that the Government of India has finally set a deadline to the Jammu and Kashmir Government for undertaking measures for the conservation of Asia’s largest freshwater lake, Wullar, in north Kashmir which has witnessed massive deterioration over the years. This time Wullar is in a pathetic condition. It would require hundreds of crores to let the lake regain its glory. It is sad that Rs 120 crore Wullar conservation project is still to witness any visible progress on ground. How can the government be so callous towards this asset? Had Wullar been in some other country, it would have been a centre of attraction for tourists. But here the lake has turned into a marshy land. Now that Centre has made it mandatory for the State Government to identity the sites for undertaking conservation measures including dredging by November 15, 2011, it is expected that the Government will perform the task. Slowly it is possible to restore the glory of Wullar Lake.
