Work on railway tunnels suspended following protests
MUHAMMAD TASKEEN
Banihal, Nov 21: The ongoing construction work on at least four tunnels on Katra-Qazigund railway project was suspended on Monday following protests by locals.
Witnesses said that work on Tunnel No.s 47P1, 46P1, 45P1 and 47P2 has been badly affected from past two days. Residents of Gool Sangaldan, Dalwah, Kaintha, Dardam and other adjoining villages staged a sit in against the IFCON, executing the railway construction work, this morning. “Several residential houses in the area have suffered damage due to the blasting work inside the tunnels outing the lives of locals at stake. Most houses in Gool-Sangaldan area of Ramban district are now unfit for the residential purposes and the construction company has failed to compensate people for the losses,” locals said.
An official of the construction company said that efforts to hold negotiations were on and the work may be resumed by Tuesday.
