Jammu, Nov 24: The Government on Thursday ordered attachment of two police officers, including an IPS officer, after a video showing interrogation of a businessman surfaced on social networking websites.
The state cabinet, which met here today, ordered attachment of SSP (Vigilance) Basant Rath and SP Kulgam Mubassir Latifee with the police headquarters.
The video created a storm in political and police circles in Jammu as names of some top politicians, bureaucrats, businessmen and police officers figured during the interrogation. “Though there does not seems to be any illegality in the interrogation as no third-degree has been used during the questioning but the officers were attached as punitive action as they used derogatory remarks against some politicians”, a senior police officer said.
It was reliably learnt that the matter was raised by a senior Congress minister in the cabinet who sought action against the police officers. “As name of Congress minister’s brother had surfaced in the video he wanted action to be initiated against the police officers who, according to him, leaked the video to the media”, sources claimed.
The video was shot during interrogation of businessman Nagar Singh at Gandhi Nagar police station and it surfaced on social networking site 'youtube' in October. Singh is in jail in connection with attempt to destroy murder weapon in a 2009 case in which his son Jitender is the prime accused.
