Students demand removal of top officials
Day 3: Protests on at NIT
ADIL BASHIR
Srinagar, Oct 12: The academics in National Institute of Technology here remain paralyzed for the third running day on Wednesday with students continuing to protest against the “denial of basic amenities.”
Students told Greater Kashmir that an NIT official approached them on Tuesday. “He told us that administration wants to hold a meeting with us,” students said, however, they were quick to add,
“We don’t want to have any meeting with the administration as we know they will victimize us in the forthcoming examinations.”
Students demanded removal of some officials who treated them harshly. “We want removal of three admin officials, including dean student affairs, director physical education and chief warden as they have treated us shabbily,” students said.
Pertinently, students have been protesting for past three days to seek basic amenities likes internet, adequate accommodation and hygienic food.
The NIT, according to the students, since its inception in August 2003 has been headless. “Without sufficient infrastructure and required faculties, the institute keeps on opening new departments,” they said. “Condition of bathrooms and toilets is pathetic and taps run dry after 8: 30 am daily.”
Students are also demanding that NIT management should provide the details of the funds sanctioned by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) for welfare of students.
For third consecutive day, Director Physical Education NIT, Niaz Ahmad refused to comment on the issue.
