Ganderbal, Oct 14: The trout Nallah of Duderhama here has been converted into garbage dumping ground, the residents of the area alleged.
 According to them, the Nallah has also shrinked due to alleged encroachments made by the locals.
 “The inhabitants of nearby area dump waste material and filth into the Nallah. The employees of sub-district hospital also dump the bio-medical waste into the nallah thereby flouting the guidelines regarding destroying of such waste,” the residents said.
 “The dumping site emanates foul smell causing immense hardships to the passerby,” Advocate Shabir Ahmad Masoodi told Greater Kashmir.
 The residents said that despite apprising the officials about the pathetic Nallah condition, they failed to do anything substantial. “The government hasn’t taken any measure to clean the nallah and remove encroachments,” the residents said while expressing anger over the indifference of local administration.
 The residents said the fish production in the Nallah had been also affected due to dumping of waste into it. “Few years back, the Nallah was abound with many fish species, but their number has decreased drastically,” the residents said and attributed to the decline to the increasing pollution in the water body.
 When contacted, Municipal Committee Ganderbal Executive Officer, Muhammad Anees Chowdhary told Greater Kashmir. “There are other departments who have to play role to restore the pristine glory of the Nallah and remove garbage and encroachments from it. We are already on the job to clear the garbage from the Nallah. Let other departments also chip in and play their role.”
