No one can take Jagjit Singh's place: Ghulam Ali

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

New Delhi, Oct 14: Ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali considers himself lucky to have been the last person to have sung with Jagjit Singh, who, he says, was God sent.
Singh, whose most memorable numbers include 'Tum itna jo muskura rahe ho' and 'Hothon se chhoo lo tum', was to perform with Ali at Mumbai's Shanmukhanand Hall on September 23, but was admitted to the hospital with brain hemorrhage on the same day.
"The night before our concert, we were in a hotel room rehearsing when Jagjit committed a mistake while singing. Later I did some mistake and we started laughing... We laughed a lot. I am lucky to have been there with him and it upsets me to even think that he is no more with us.
"His voice and his way of singing was very unique. He was truly God sent and was blessed with a voice that was so soulful," said Ali.
The 71-year-old Pakistani singer said that the demise of Singh, also known as 'Ghazal king', is a huge loss.
"His loss is irreparable. No one can fill his place. He was a simple man with a clear heart and magical voice. It is not something you can get by practising but only with God's grace. Today it is hard to find such a voice, Jagjit will always be with us and in our hearts. His songs are evergreen," said Ali, who was in the capital last night to attend an event organised by NGO Ekta Mission to pay tribute to Singh.
Ali also said that today's music is not even close to what music should be but is just mere noise.
"Today music is all about jumping and dancing with some noise in the background, it is not even close to what music is actually. It is something which is done in a hurry for short term success. Such music won't last for long," he added.
