Sopore, Oct 19: Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday called upon the affluent sections of the society to come forward for supplementing the efforts aimed at securing the larger welfare of orphans, destitute children and other less privileged segments of the community.      
 The Governor at the inaugural ceremony of Dar-Ul-Salam Children’s Home, established by the JK PET Welfare Society, here in north Kashmir stressed on the need to focus on nurturing moral and ethical values among the children along with their academic learning. He observed that education should not aim only at acquiring knowledge and passing examinations but must also promote and inculcate moral values among the youth.
 Referring to the J&K PET Welfare Society, the Governor lauded its initiatives to secure the welfare of orphans and hoped that many others would emulate the good work being done by this organization to help destitute children to be able to stand on their own feet. Referring to the profile of the functionaries of JK PET Welfare Society, the large majority of whom are retired government officials, the Governor complimented them for setting such a good example of paying back to the society at least a small part of what they had received from society.
 The Governor wished the J&K PET Welfare Society success in its ongoing initiatives and offered it support for carrying out its various activities for the welfare of orphans and destitute children.
 The Governor distributed merit-cum-means scholarships to four meritorious students on this occasion, besides a financial assistance of Rs. 5,000 to a widow on behalf of the Society.
 In his welcome address, Prof Muhammad Muzaffar War, President of the Society dwelt on the history, evolution, activities and future action plan of the organization. He also gave details of the facilities being provided to the orphan and destitute girl children at the PET Children’s Home at Baramulla. He thanked the Governor for taking keen interest, particularly in the welfare and education of the orphans, destitute, physically challenged and other less privileged children.
 Justice B A Kirmani (Retd), former Judge of the High Court in his address congratulated the Society for setting up Dar-Ul-Salam Children’s Home for orphans and destitute children at Sopore. He added that this step would make a real difference in the lives of these children.
 To begin with, 200 orphan and destitute boys from 7 to 10 years of age will be provided free board and lodging facilities by the Society in this three-storey Home. The Society will also facilitate the education of these children.
