Will go ahead with Abattoir construction: SMC
Reaction
GK NEWS NETWORK
Srinagar, Oct 19: Responding to Greater Kashmir news report that youth are up in arms against the government plan of constructing abattoir at Allocha Bagh vacant land, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has vehemently said that the slaughter house would be constructed at the site come what may.
In a written handout, the Joint Commissioner SMC Fayaz Ahmed Bala said 32 Kanals of land have been transferred to Srinagar Municipal Corporation for construction of Modern Abattoir.
“Since the construction of Abattoir and Sewerage Treatment Plant are the basic requirement of the citizens of Srinagar City, the land in question cannot be allowed to be utilized for any purpose other than what has been acquired for,” Bala said.
Pertinently the government decision to construct modern abattoir on the vacant piece of land at Aloocha Bagh in south City has triggered a controversy as scores of youth who would play there are all fire over the issue and have threatened to launch protests should the “decades old playfield be snatched from them.”
The ground spanning over around 100 kanals had been serving as a playfield for the vast stretch of south City including Aloocha Bagh, Wazir Bagh, Tulsi Bagh, Barzulla, Hyderpora, Batamaloo and Bemina areas.
The people from the sports fraternity said the field used to be abuzz with sports activities since wee hours when hundreds of youth from the adjoining areas (mostly void of any such facility) would throng the playfield for the gaming activities.
But for now the land has been allotted by the Housing and Urban Development department (H&UDD) to the SMC for the construction of the abattoir.
“Keeping in mind that as per a recent order from the Housing and Urban Development department, the land has been allotted to Srinagar Municipal Corporation for construction of Modern Abattoir in Srinagar,” reads the copy of an order issued by Commissioner Secretary H&UDD Suresh Kumar vide order No 153 of 2011 dated June 22.
