Khomeni Chowk protests ‘Govt apathy’

SYED IMRAN ALI HAMDANI

Srinagar, Oct 8: Massive protest demonstrations were held Saturday at Khomeini Chowk Bemina against what the locals said “state government’s callous attitude towards problems being faced by the residents of old Bemina”.
Shouting anti-government slogans, the angry protestors alleged that the government under a “well-planned conspiracy” has been ignoring the old Bemina while recently developed residential colonies are getting “undue benefits”.
The protestors were joined by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader and former minister, Aga Syed Mehbood, who was apprised about the problems faced by the residents.
The protesters told him that “senior officials were misusing their official position to get undue benefits for the colonies they live in.”
Later addressing the protestors, Mehmood lashed out at the state government for “having converted the civil secretariat into a blackmailing centre”.
Citing a recent example of the official “highhandedness”, Mehmood said that a Babu had managed to get a third electric transformer of 250 KV for his colony comprising not more than 100 households.
“This is an irony that while the colony has been provided third electric transformer by the PDD officials, the repeated requests for electric transformers by Mohallas like ours have been turned down,” he said. The protesters later dispersed.
