25 quintals polythene seized

Drive against polythene continues

GK NEWS NETWORK

Srinagar, Sep 22: Continuing their drive against the trade and use of polythene carry bags, a joint team of J&K State Pollution Control Board and Srinagar Municipal Corporation carried out a raid at Moominabad Tengpora in Srinagar and seized about 2500 kilograms of polythene carry bags from a wholesale dealer. The confiscated material was shredded on the spot and transported to Achan dumping site for disposal.
An FIR has been registered against the offender for stocking and selling banned polythene carry bags.
The drive is being conducted on the directions of Minister for Environment and Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmad.
Member Secretary, J&K SPCB, Arun Kumar Tikoo (IFS) appealed the public in general and traders in particular to desist from trade and use of polythene carry bags. “Legal action will be taken against the defaulters,” he said.
Polythene carry bags have been banned in the state vide J&K Non-biodegradable Material (management, handling and disposal) Rules, 2009, the J&K SPCB spokesman said.
Meanwhile SMC’s Chief Sanitation Officer, Manzoor Ahmed Turray said no leniency would be made towards those violating the norms by selling or using polythene. “We strive to make Srinagar polythene free,” he added.
