GURU CLEMENCY RESOLUTION
Jammu, Sep 26: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced that it would hold state-wide demonstration against the “controversial” resolution favouring clemency for Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru on September 28 when it is slated to be taken up for discussion in the State Legislative Assembly.
The party also warned the National Conference-Congress coalition Government in the State and the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre against any ‘misadventure’ on the issue.
“In case there is any leniency shown to Afzal Guru, there will be a country-wide reaction and repercussion to it,” BJP state chief Shamsher Singh Manhas told reporters here on Monday.
He said “this was a peculiar situation and for the first time in the history of the state that there was a Chief Minister who was talking like a separatist leader”.
“Omar Abdullah has crossed all limits of official decorum and is carrying forward the agenda of Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani and others without any check from the Government of India,” he charged.
The BJP spokesman Jitender Singh alleged, “Guru’s issue has triggered competitive politics in Kashmir valley between NC and PDP. Both the parties are trying their best to appease separatists’ constituency on the issue.”
Citing instance, he recalled Omar’s statement in Parliament “Ek inch Zameen Nahi denge” (will not give a single inch of land) during Amarnath land imbroglio in 2008. “His question on the state’s accession with India, his referring to PaK as Azad Kashmir and latest case of advocating clemency for Afzal Guru, whose conviction has been upheld by Supreme Court and mercy appeal rejected by President of India, shows his separatist tendencies,” he said.
The BJP leader also demanded disbanding of New Delhi nominated three-member panel alleging that two of them Dileep Padgoankar and Radha Kumar had “lost their credibility by admitting that they had been accepting the hospitality of ISI agent Ghulam Nabi Fai.”
“Vesting such persons with such a weighty task of making recommendations to meet the demands of Hurriyat and their ilk does not augur well for the people of J&K state as well as the unity and integrity of the country,” he suggested.
He said that BJP would also discuss this issue in its national executive meet scheduled to be held at New Delhi on September 30 and October 1 and chalk out the further course of action.(GKNN)
