5 killed, 20 injured in Delhi building collapse

New Delhi, Sep 27: Five people were killed and more than 20 injured under the debris of a 60-year-old three-storeyed building in central Delhi that collapsed Tuesday evening, police said.
Another 20 people were feared to be trapped in the debris, police said.
The incident took place in Chandni Mahal area, near the Jama Masjid, at around 8 p.m.
"The building, situated near Jama Masjid, suddenly collapsed. Five people died in the incident and more than 20 injured people have been rushed to Lok Nayak Hospital," said a fire brigade officer.
At least 25 people were pulled out of the debris and taken to hospital where doctors declared five dead, including four women.
Police said the building seems to have collapsed due to the impact of construction of another building adjacent to it.
According to the fire brigade officer, two JCB machines were rushed to the site of the accident, in a narrow lane, as soon as information was received.
Rescue workers hunted through the rubble to locate survivors.
A large number of local people gathered at the spot and helped in the rescue work.
Meanwhile, police evacuated people residing in nearby buildings as a precautionary measure.
Teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the Delhi Disaster Management Authorityhave also been deployed, apart from police and the fire brigade.
According to police, more than 50 people were staying in the residential building.
Yogender Chandolia, chairman of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi's (MCD) Standing Committee, said the MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra has been asked to inquire into the incident.
"I have asked him to submit a report in tomorrow's (Wednesday) Standing Committee meeting," he said.
Chandolia said there were several old and dilapidated buildings in the area.
"We need to take a call on this," he said. IANS
